Golden Nativity by starcross Golden Nativity by starcross
"Golden Nativity"
Watercolour and coloured pencils
January 2010

MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
I know it's a late submission, but I don't really care, because for us believers, Christ should always be born and alive within our hearts regardless of the season. :) The Nativity is one of the Christian mysteries that should be celebrated by the soul all-year round.

Technically, this piece is a breakthrough for me. I've finally understood the beautiful essence of watercolour, especially the unifying effect of the glazing technique. I painted the whole surface yellow at first, splotched some orange with sponges, then gradually shaped the individual images, "bringing them to life".

You can see there are some white and golden roses scattered around. Roses symbolise Mary (Mary is the Mystical Rose, or Rosa Mystica). White roses are for her purity, and golden roses are for her glory as God's precious.

This is beautiful, Starcross. Yes, it's an all-year-around journey. I've recently been teaching how incarnation and crucifixion/resurrection are indissolubly linked; there is no part of the Christian year that is not touched by the miracle of incarnation. No part of human being that is not made eternal nor any part of salvation that is not made human by God in Christ. Isn't that pure joy!?

Hello,

I work for a charity in Wirral, UK and we were wondering if we could use your art as the basis for our e-card?

Any thoughts???

Paul

Your artwork is breathtaking. I wish I could use colored pencils like you do. I am only confident in watercolor (even though I am not that good in it either). I love the writeup as well.
